Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy Event

Hollyhock House, World Heritage and Hollywood

AltSaturday, February 26: Los Angeles, California

Just one day before the Academy Awards, the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy will roll out the (Cherokee) red carpet for a Hollywood-style event in the City of Angels.

Join the Conservancy for an architecturally star-studded double-feature with two of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most innovative and engaging structures. The day will begin with a tour of the Millard House (1923-1924), also known as “La Miniatura” and referred to by Neil Levine, eminent Wright scholar and Harvard professor, as the most celebrated example of Wright’s textile block system. After spending the morning in Pasadena, participants will travel west to Barnsdall Park for a lecture addressing the ongoing UNESCO World Heritage List nomination process. The lecture, given by Lynda Waggoner, Director of Fallingwater, Vice President of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and FLWBC board member, will focus on the Conservancy’s serial nomination of several Wright structures, including Hollyhock House, for possible inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Described by professor Levine as “an exceedingly original adaptation of the local Spanish tradition of a patio house combined with reference to ancient Amerindian forms,” Hollyhock House stands as one of the most compelling examples of Wright’s work. “As a romantic expression of southern California,” professor Levine continued, “the house gives the idea of regionalism a truly modern form.” After the lecture, attendees will have a chance to talk with Ms. Waggoner, other Conservancy board members, City Council representatives and Department of Cultural Affairs representatives at a post-lecture reception. There will also be self-guided, docent-stationed tours for participants to enjoy the monumental splendor of Hollyhock House at their own pace. The evening will conclude with a trip to Beverly Hills for a sunset reception at the home of Ron Burkle, Green Acres Estate. Originally built for silent film star Harold Lloyd in the 1920s, Green Acres remains one of Hollywood’s most iconic residences.

Registration forms are available on the Conservancy’s website. The cost to attend all four events is $150. As part of the Conservancy’s educational outreach, the World Heritage lecture and Hollyhock tour will be offered at no charge although donations will be accepted. Reservations must be made before Monday, February 21.

>>Register today, space is limited.

>>If you are unable to attend but would like to receive future mailings, please contact the Conservancy

The World Heritage lecture and tour is hosted by the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy and co-sponsored by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Construction breaks ground on Barnsdall Monument Sign

On January 6th at noon, a Groundbreaking Ceremony was held to celebrate the commencement of construction of the new sign at the entrance to Barnsdall Park.  In addition to members of the community, City Councilmembers Eric Garcetti and Tom LaBonge were in attendance, as well as Co-President Jack Wiant of the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation, and Nyla Arslanian, President of the Hollywood Arts Council and VP of Advocacy for the Foundation.

This beautiful and iconic structure will reside at the foot of the Hill fronting Hollywood Boulevard to create greater visibility and integration with the surrounding neighborhood.  The planning and fundraising for the sign project has been eight years in the making, and an important capital project for the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation.  The sign project is a powerful example of the Foundation’s commitment to the park and its desire to help the City keep it a vibrant, viable, and integral part of our community.

We would like to thank architect and Foundation board member James Heaton III for all his efforts to bring the sign project to this stage.  Without his hard volunteer work, it would not have been possible.

Support the arts this holiday

Barnsdall Art Park is the only public community art park in Los Angeles and we need your support.
This holiday season we are offering a unique opportunity to give your loved ones and friends a gift that is like no other, while simultaneously supporting our efforts to maintain and protect the park, its icons and the integrity of its community based arts programming. Consider these holiday gift opportunities:
Share a gift with a friend or loved oneDonating:
One (1) Golden Ticket, good for a single admittance to any of the 2012 Wine Tasting event next summer $25
Two (2) Golden Tickets and a picnic blanket $65
Four (4) Golden Tickets and a picnic basket with service for four$250
One (1) Season Pass, good for one person to attend all Wine Tasting events during the summer of 2012* and tour of the Hollyhock House with historic curator, picnic blanket and picnic basket$500
Two (2) Season Passes, tour of the Hollyhock House with historic curator, picnic blanket and picnic basket$1000
2010 has been one of great activity for Barnsdall Art Park Foundation, a support organization for Barnsdall Art Park:
Barnsdall Art Center held over 150 weekly classes for children and adults. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House hosted over 10,000 guests in guided tours, while it continues to be restored and refurnished. The Municipal Art Gallery held 7 exhibitions showcasing contemporary Los Angeles artists—including an Open Call for hundreds of local artists judged by curators from LACMA and the Hammer Museum—and generated significant accolades throughout the artistic community as a result.

The Barnsdall Friday Summer Wine Tastings have brought over 6,000 people to enjoy the majestic setting of the park and Hollyhock House. Saturday evenings in October, the Park hosted hundreds of people to enjoy screenings of architecturally significant films shot in our surrounding community.

Your support of the wine tasting and movie night events helped sponsor Free Art Sundays, offering over 1,500 children and adult community members the opportunity to explore creativity and art with their own hands.

We hope you share in our pride in these accomplishments, as well as our desire to achieve much more.

While Barnsdall Art Park has emboldened a community arts renaissance, the struggling economy has put extreme pressure on the Park. The City department which runs much of the Park has had its staff and budget severely cut. As a consequence the City has initiated a process to partner with a non-profit organization to sustain Barnsdall Park in the future. The Barnsdall Art Park Foundation continues to work with the City to ensure that this process does not strip the community of the wonderful resource it has had for over 50 years. For the last decade, the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation has been raising money and funding projects to enhance the Park. We ask for your help so we can continue this important work.
