มูลนิธิ Barnsdall Art Park, in cooperation with East Hollywood and Greater Griffith Park Neighborhood Council and the Hollywood Arts Council invites you to attend a Barnsdall Park Community Stakeholders Meeting on Tuesday October 5th at 6:30pm in the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre.

Los Angeles faces an unprecedented financial crisis that deeply affects its Department of Cultural Affairs. In order to continue to offer arts programs at 15 facilities in our city, a Request for Proposals process is being created to partner with non-profit organizations.
Barnsdall Art Park’s arts centers, gallery and theatre are among the facilities for which an operational partner is being sought.

There will be brief comments by the hosting organizations and presentation of the facts of the current situation by the Olga Garay, General Manager, Department of Cultural Affairs, Marta Segura, Council President Eric Garcetti’s representative to the Working Group, and Councilmember Tom LaBonge, Chair of Arts, Parks, Heath and Aging Committee. A panel will select your written questions for response.

Foundation Project to Restore Kiln

Our new kilns have been certified! It was not that long ago that the kilns outside the Barnsdall Art Center (Residence A) supported both budding and highly accomplished ceramicists from around the City. Unfortunately along with the closure of the Park for the Master Plan capital work, Barnsdall’s famous kilns were also shuttered.

But bringing back the kilns has required purchase of new kilns and the construction of a new shed in the Park to house those kilns. That required money that the City did not have, so the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation raised $42,500 in donations to enable the project to proceed.

The construction of the kilns by the City was thanks to the personal efforts of Doc Ngiem.

Arts Programs at Barnsdall Slated for Closure: Show your support

Nine cultural centers and theatres in the City of Los Angeles are slated for closure.

Arts for LA has received word that the City of Los Angeles has begun implementing its plan to cease community programs or close centers supported by DCA:

Watts Towers

1. Barnsdall Arts Center
2. Barnsdall Junior Arts Center
3. William Grants Still Arts Center
4. Charles Mingus Youth Arts Center
5. Watts Towers Arts Center
6. Madrid Theater
7. Barnsdall Gallery Theatre
8. Warner Grand Theatre
9. Vision Theatre (when the rehab is complete)

Community members of each of these centers are organizing independently. To support these community voices, Arts for LA has launched an online advocacy center for each of the slated facilities to allow stakeholders to express their support for their local arts center. As a convenor, Arts forLA’s goal for these campaigns is to provide a framework for communities to effectively organize around an area of mutual concern, interest and value. It is our hope that the City will continue to maintain its commitment to providing access to rich and diverse cultural experiences for its 4+ million residents and 25 million annual visitors. We also hope that the communities around these centers will be respectful and proactive in their comments.
